Wind Animals – Strandbeests by Theo Jansen

by lise on October 6, 2008

All of us have friends who send us wacky and wonderful links to cool websites.  Here’s one that I want to share.

It’s from the 2007 TED conference.  TED = Technology, Entertainment, Design.  The conference began in 1984.  Over 4-days fifty great thinkers have no more than 18-minutes to present their ideas and the projects they work on.

In 2007, Dutch artist Theo Jansen talked about his kinetic beach creatures and how he makes them.  Jansen’s “Strandbeests” are powered by wind.  Not only does the wind move them forward, but Jansen created an ingenious system so that the beasts stay out of the water and away from the dunes.

Here’s the link to his 8-minute presentation.
