We talked about an eco-nightclub that opened in London, United Kingdom earlier this year. The New York Times has reported on another one, this time in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Club Watt has a 270-square foot piezoelectric dance floor.
The Times article shares an interesting statistic: the “average person dancing” generates about 20-watts of energy; two people can light a bulb. Club Watt has capacity for 1,400. Its owners hope that the dance floor will ultimately contribute to 10 percent of the club’s total electricity.
In addition to the piezoelectric floor, the club installed energy efficient light fixtures and water saving fixtures in the washrooms. The men’s room has waterless urinals, and the toilets flush using captured rainwater.
The article includes a link to a short video on how piezoelectric floors work. It’s a great 1-minute primer.
