IRENA – An International Agency Devoted to Renewable Energy

Yesterday the Worldwatch Institute published an article announcing the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).  The agency will formally open its doors in January 2009.

Fifty-one nations from all over the world have already agreed to fund and support the agency.   Denmark, Germany, and Spain, the organization’s founders, will co-lead IRENA.

Although other organizations exist that address energy initiatives, IRENA founders believe none currently focus exclusively on renewables.  IRENA aims to become the principal cheerleader.  Its founders plan to provide economic and technical advice to nations throughout the world.

Other countries that have signed on include: nations in Central and South America (including Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica); African nations (such as Ghana, Kenya, and Mali); places in the Middle East (Egypt, the United Arab Emirates); Asian giants (including India, Indonesia, and Vietnam); Australia; and most of the countries in Europe.

In January 2009, participants plan to meet in Bonn, Germany to finalize the IRENA agreement; by June 2009 the group intends to have selected its interim director and headquarters location.
