A Housing Development Powered by the Sun

Hollywood, California is still reaching for the sun (and the stars, of course).  MasterCraft Homes has broken ground on a 34 single-family detached home community located south of Sunset Boulevard and close to LA theatres and shopping.  The houses are being built on city land that was once a convalescent hospital.

The Gatsby Hollywood development touts itself as LA’s “first solar-powered urban enclave” and each home will have its own photovoltaic array.  The houses also integrate other green building features to capitalize on energy efficiency.  Each home comes outfitted with energy-efficient appliances, thermal paned windows, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and a tankless water heater.

Tankless water heaters use a heat exchanger and a high-output heater to heat water.  The tanks use electricity or natural gas to power the unit each time hot water is required.  It’s a great way to efficiently heat water – and save on both water and energy.  For although tankless water heaters superheat lots of hot water, they do have limits, as people who take long showers may find out.  But that’s a good thing – we need to protect our water resources too.
