Slick Solar Style

Solar power is sexy now.  It’s always been compelling in a “I know I should” kind of way.  However, recently solar’s been looking hot. Solar’s done it in the same way people have for decades, by losing weight.  You might think solar power is the province of giant panels and power plants, but advances have shrunk the technology so much it can fit in your wardrobe.  Now you can harness the sun wherever you go, and look great while doing it.

One reason for this is Italian designer Ermenegildo Zegna.  His aptly named  “Zegna” clothing line is classic cool, and thanks to a collaboration with German textile-technology company “Interactive Wear” it combines sharp lines with even sharper technology.  The Zegna Sport Solar JKT can harness a watt of solar power through the panels in the collar, transmitting sweet free electricity, via cabling woven into the jacket, down into outlets in the pockets.

Phone running out?  No need to hope and pray the last flashing bar will last long enough to catch a vital call.  When your battery is low just plug your phone into the pocket outlet to recharge.  Never again need you suffer in silence, as the pocket outlets mean can power any you can charge any personal MP3 or iPod device.  Some cynics may point out that a jacket which only works in direct sunlight isn’t very smart or balk at the jacket’s expensive $1,350 price tag.

But the high fashion (and higher price) crowd aren’t the only ones wising up to free power – the gadget crowd are there as well.  SCOTTeVEST are a clothing company specifically geared towards the gadget-geek, selling jackets featuring more pockets and buckles than the average commando team.  The prices are definitely more manageable too.  With the SCOTTeVEST Solar Powered Jacket you can do more than just store your computerized cargo: you can keep it fully charged at all times.

The copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar panels on the SCOTTeVEST are far more visible.  Rather woven directly into the garment like the Zegna, the SCOTTeVEST-ee products show off an entire back, wires and all as if to usher in the tech age in style.

These green garments are just part of the new wave of solar technology.  What would have been unthinkable a decade before is made possible by advances in solar cell manufacturing, particularly increases in the efficiency of the energy-collecting materials.  Get solar stylin’ today.
