Here at Cooler Planet, we’re dedicated to bringing you the best solar technologies on the market. But your home’s electric supply isn’t the only place solar helps deliver clean energy to save the planet. Think of solar hot water, or solar cooking. Or consider the newest use of solar panels from California-based Meraki, which aims to make wireless connectivity a global affair.
Meraki currently sells its mesh WiFi networks everywhere, including remote locations like Coelemu, Chile, where a Meraki hub serves 1,000 who would otherwise have no access.
Other Meraki installations, in hotels, educational institutions and municipalities from Alaska to San Francisco, make connectivity a snap. Literally. These self-configuring systems allow subscribers to deploy in days, not months, and the web-based dashboard management system means fewer technicians and less maintenance. In addition, the mesh architecture (linked devices rather than electrical networks) also eliminates network failures.
Now, in an effort to reach even farther, Meraki is offering a solar-powered router with battery that you can take on walkabout to stay connected. Starting in December, this router – at $1,500 for a model that comes with its own solar panels (or about half that much if you buy and install the panels yourself) – allows you to venture into the jungles of Borneo and still be WiFi equipped. You won’t even need an elephant to pack it in, because the device only weighs two pounds!
Meraki says this new portability tool will dramatically increase its reach. Considering the fact that this technology eliminates the need for costly electric installations, the price is also quite reasonable.
Of course, not all of you have extreme connectivity needs, and that $1,500 would probably be better spent putting in a 150-watt system to run exterior lights like walkways, sensor lights and patio lights.
