Larry Hagman is Solar Panel Crazy

by Tillie on December 10, 2008

The former J.R. Ewing, actor and green-guy Larry Hagman, agrees he has played one of the meanest oilmen in Hollywood. But au contraire, he surprises me as one of the top energy-efficient Hollywood men to date, next to Ed Begley, Jr. or Jackson Browne. Needless to say, he has this magnificent 25,000 square foot residence, which, according to Hagman, incorporates more solar panels than probably any other single residence. Not bad for a cowboy.

He also has retractable skylights, eliminating the need for air conditioning. He says his annual energy bill totals $13.  And get this: Hagman’s solar system goes beyond his own needs, so he supplies solar power to five neighboring lower-income homes.  I think, we all can learn something from this Hollywood guy. Don’t you?

Even though I’m much too young to have seen any of Dallas, I have fond memories of Mr. Hagman’s work in I Dream of Jeannie, which ran in syndication when I was a kid. Since then I haven’t heard a whole lot about him, but this post about his green thinking in general and specifically his solar power system was really a breath of fresh air. I did a little more reading on his post-acting work and he has some fascinating endeavors going on. He also has a home in one of my favorite California towns – Mayne I’ll knock on his door next time I’m there!
