Recently on the Barbara Walters show, Presidential-elect Obama said he’s going to turn the White House green, which I think is a brilliant move. The President is also setting a good example for the American public. I mean how can the country be interested in green if the White House stays white.
When Jimmy Carter was president he installed solar panels. The solar power addition was put in place to heat water for the staff eating area.
Then in 1986 the panels were removed for the roof to be repaired and never reinstalled. Glen Close came to the rescue and moved them to be installed at Unity College to heat water for the college cafeteria.
The panels left the college in 2005 and are the subject of a new documentary, A Road Not Taken.
Where this all leads, I don’t know. But the point is that solar power is a simple source of energy that can easily be used at the White House. I hope President-elect Obama installs them at the White House.
